July 2007 update:
Quite and gentle Mace is now a
celebrity!! Her picture was chosen to represent our goats here at Black
Mesa Ranch in the new book, “The Atlas of American Artisan Cheese”. While
most dairies featured in this lovely book only get one page, BMR got a two
page spread – mostly to make room for Mace’s picture! She is a good
looking girl. We are hoping the fame doesn’t go to her head.
July 2006 update:
All we had to do was ask. Mace kidded with
triplets this year and that seems to have triggered her milk making
abilities. Mace is milking like a champ now, over a gallon a day at over 7%
butterfat. That will keep David busy making cheese!
2005 update:
Mace has really grown up this year. She has matured amazingly,
becoming deep and wide and capacious. Unfortunately she only had a
single kid again this year and we feel this is holding her back as a milker
- she's just not getting the "natural incentive" of many mouths to feed to
crank up the milk making. The high quality of her milk will
allow her to get her milking star this year, but we'd like to see a bit more
milk quantity also. Her udder is nicely formed and she milks out well.
Mace is a real gentle, sweet girl, with lots of spunk.
More background on Mace (2003-04):
Mace is the "black goat" of the family,
quite literally. We were very surprised at her coloration since all of
our herd is more of a mahogany brown color. Mom
Anise does have a strong black
undercoat that is very visible in winter and we have since found out that
dad Guajillo's dam is black and
tan so more generations of kids with black coloring can be expected.
Besides her coloring, her beautiful classic dairy characteristics really
stand out. She has a friendly attitude but is just as happy browsing
with the herd as playing with her people. Mace, as a yearling first
freshener, is a wonderful addition to our milking lineup. Her
udder is silky smooth and milks out easily. |
